Bela Lugosi receieves top billing in "Night Monster" (1942), a minor Universal horror about strange goings on at the mansion of a severely disabled recluse, ending with multiple murders and a search for the monstrous killer. There are plenty of red herrings in this movie. Lugosi plays the butler, and actually appears very little in the movie. Horror staple Lionel Atwill receieves second billing and appears in the movie even less. The creepiest performance comes from Leif Erickson as the slimy chauffer. I actually found this movie pretty enjoyable, partially because it was new to me, and also because I really like old dark house mysteries such as "The Cat and the Canary" (1927). "Night Monster" also has a terrific score credited to Hans J. Salter.
