Bernie Wrightson is likely to be the first artist to come to mind when the words "horror" and "comics" are used together. His detailed linework and crosshatching is suggestive of woodcut illustrations, and he draws rotting zombies and misshapen freaks of nature better than anyone, Best known for his work on
Swamp Thing,
Creepshow, and his gorgeously illustrated adaptation of
Frankenstein, he also draws really great werewolves, such as those shown in this post taken from
Cycle of the Werewolf his collaboration with Stephen King which was initially begun as a calendar,
Swamp Thing, other comic books, and sketches done for fans.
I've always loved and been inspired by his werewolves. One small detail that set them apart, in my mind at least, was their claws. Wrightson strikes that perfect balance between human hand and wolf paw. You can feel the strength in them. Especially the werewolf scratching the church pew and the one gripping the driver's face.
ReplyDeleteThose are terrifying! This just reinforces my fear of werewolves.
ReplyDeleteI'll be linking to this when I do Werewolf Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteAnother favourite Horror/Comic artist is Mike Ploog.
