The Annotated Xombi

A few days ago I mentioned that I'd been considering something as a way of giving back to all the fans of Xombi for being so supportive of this series, as short lived as it was.

Now that all six issues have been published and everyone has had a chance to read them, I thought about taking some time here to go through some of the comments and questions I've seen posted on various message boards, blogs and websites and address them. Additionally, I thought about going through the series and giving some behind the scenes looks at what inspired some of the material, what references there might be, and some other general process stuff that I think won't take away from the reading experience.

If anyone is interested in seeing something like this, please let me know. If you have any questions, or comments of your own regarding Xombi that you'd like me to address, please leave them in the comments box below. I'm not sure how soon I'd be able to get this up. It depends on my workload. I would like to dedicate enough time to this to make it a worthwhile venture. November is traditionally my lightest month, so most likely it would happen then.

Please spread the word so that people are aware of this.

In the meantime, please also note that a trade paperback collection of  Xombi is scheduled for February. Please order it through your local comic book store or independent bookseller. It's also available at Amazon.com here and at the link below.

I, for one, would love an annotated Xombi. Hope you can see your way to doing it!

I would also love such a thing, as Xombi has been the gem of this year's super-crop.

I'd love it! I'm always curious about behind the scenes/making of type things.

This would be amazing and a consolation prize of sorts for the series not being part of the relaunch. Please!

Another yes, please! to the inquiry. Nothing would complete my life more than that.

Absolutely! I was so excited by the existence of Xombi on the comics landscape. Hoping massive trade sales will inspire a relaunch.

Annotated Xombi would be excellent. Also, I remember reading somewhere that after the original series, there was something written about where the series would have gone. Is that article/blog post still floating around the Internet somewhere?

Thanks everyone. If you have any questions or complaints specific to anything in the series, please let me know and I'll address it.

Michael May -- Thanks for helping get the word out.

Folsom -- I don't specifically remember which interview(s) had that. On the main page of this blog is a section called labels, try the posts under interviews, or xombi. You should find it through there.

How much of the character design for the denizens of the Strongholds, especially finch's henchman was drawn from actual Mythology and how much was pulled right out of your imagination/earlier run? And I'll definitely be spreading the word about this on my blog.

Hi there! I just finished Xombi #6, and I want to thank you for this extraordinary series. It was beautiful, weird, and funny. I'd appreciate any extra info you'd be willing to supply! As a monk-to-be, I'd like some more background info about Nun of the Above and Nun the Less. For one, did you have any inspiration from real or fictional nuns for them?

I loved this series--knew nothing about Xombi going in, but was interested in the concept and Frazer Irving's art. Was more than pleasantly surprised; sad to see it end.

Yes please!

I've always wondered whether the weird global stuff that was featured in the first few pages of issue#1 was ever meant to be expanded upon later in the run?

Did you have any particular inspiration for the supernatural elements to this story? Some stuff was so far out there and I loved it!

Also, where would you have taken the book next?

Thanks! - Jamie

Did you ever have a plan for David's girlfriend Dalila? Although she was mentioned often (and her dislike of surprises) did she ever actually show up in the series? I thought she was in the last issue, and I know she was in the Brave & Bold issue with the Spectre; but were you ever going to have David finally tell her?

New Static was great, too!

Just to let anyone who might still be checking this know, I have not forgotten. October and November ended up being rather busy, so I decided to put this off rather than do a half-assed job of it. I'm now planning to run this to coincide with the release of the tpb at the beginning of February.
