After a two month hiatus, "Ask Me Anything" is back. On the first Monday of every month, excepy October, I'll field any questions and try and answer them throughout the month during which they were asked.
Questions can be about anything at all; my work, my influences, my opinions, stuff I've watched, read, looked at, eaten, or listened to, or anything else you might want to know, and that I might have an answer for. Head down to the comment section and post your question. I'll either post my answer in the comment section as well, or answer it in a special post all its own sometime later in the month.
Please take the time to view the previous questions so that we don't wind up with a lot of repetition. I've been asked a lot of good, thought provoking questions in the past as well as some really banal ones, all of which I tried to answer. Annotated Xombi?

After I announced that I ended up overwhelmed with all of the stuff I had to deal with on Static Shock! and then took on a project that ate up all of my time until about a month after the trade paperback of Xombi came out. By then, I wasn't sure there was still any interest.
ReplyDeleteMy feeling, with anything, is that if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it right and make it something that's worth the time of the person reading it. I didn't want to whip out some half-assed supplemental material.
After the holidays I'll see if I can put something together that fits that criteria. Check back after the new year. Sorry to keep you waiting and thanks for still wanting to see it.
Well, I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I'd bet good cash money there's still a lot of interest in it.

ReplyDeleteI feel really bad about the results of Static Shock being canceled. Unfortunately, I never really kept up with comics, so my knowledge is limited only to the entire Static Shock Animated series, but I still love the concept and the creation of the characters.
If you would be willing, I would like to try to help rebuild the Static Shock comics to glory. I really want to delve into the backstories of characters as well as help in anyway that I can in the comics.
Sadly, I am not a good cartoonist, so I don't think I would be good working as an artist in the series, but I do have ideas for the series.
My favorite villain of the animated series was Hotstreak (which kind of pissed me off that he was now part of a white supremacy group, but i'm not claiming you for it), and I loved all the heroes of the series (even She-bang, despite her limited, if not non-existent, role in the plot).
If you'd be willing, let's prove to everyone that you are not the one at fault for Static's decline. Let's prove what can be done.

Sebastian -- I have no say in the future of Static in any form right now. The character has been licensed to DC Comics, and during the time of that licensing, it's entirely up to DC on how, and even if, they use Static, or any of his supporting cast. Once that licensing agreement ends, the rights to Static will revert back to Milestone Media, the owners of the character, and it will be up to them what will happen with the character. If asked again to try and do something with Static, I'd probably be willing, but I doubt that will happen.
ReplyDeleteJohn -- Is there a way to get involved in the Milestone franchise? I don't have experience, but i was wondering if there was a way to get involved in writing a few issues about Hotstreak. I know that he wasn't very involved, but I loved his character in the animated series and I want to use the opportunity brought by the New 52 to erase the White supremacist situation from his record and delve more into making him an Anti-villain.

There's not really any way to do that now. The Milestone franchise is tied up with DC and I doubt they'd be willing to give any of the Milestone villains their own mini-series right now, especially since none of the main Milestone characters are to be seen anywhere in the DCU right now (that I'm aware of,) let alone their own series.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, my best advice to you would be to create your own characters and produce your own comics, even if your goal is to work someplace like DC or Marvel.
Otherwise hit some conventions where editors from companies you're interested in working will be present and talk to them about breaking in.
The climate in comics right now is not very friendly to new talent. Most companies don't have enough work to keep their regular writers and artists employed and are hesitant to take on anyone new.
