31 Days of Halloween - Day 3 - Movie 1

A mother and daughter pair of vampires (Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan) are forced to flee to a coastal town where after 200 years on the run they attempt to begin new lives for themselves. Quiet, introspective, daughter, Eleanor, who uses her cravings for blood to release the elderly longing to die is at odds with her more predatory mother, Clara, who forced into a life of prostitution at a young age, preys on those who benefit from the suffering of women. Eleanor's desire to bring honesty to her new life leads to their possible destruction.

Byzantium (2012) focuses more on the existential crises of its characters than on the horror (though there is plenty of that), and what it means to be locked into performing the same roles and being fugitives for two centuries. It's a lovely looking movie that really holds the viewer's interest as the story gradually unfolds. The characters are more complex than they at first appear to be, and can't seem to help keeping their lives tragic. I really enjoyed this.
