I've loved the drawing "All Is Vanity" (seen above) by Charles Allan Gilbert (1973-1929), an American illustrator and early animator, since the first time I laid eyes on it. I'd long planned to use it as the basis for a cover for my comic book series, Midnight, Mass., but the series didn't last long enough to get to it. It's a popular image and one that inspired numerous variations that actually came to fruition, including this perfume ad by Dior.
The Dior ad was not the first photographic interpretation of Gilbert's drawing.
Here are some of the other, less direct, variations inspired by "All Is Vanity".
Click on any image to view it larger. Tomorrow I'll show you Salvador Dali's skull illusion and the famous movie poster that utilized it.
