31 Days of Halloween - Day 11 - Movie 2
When Akira learns that his missing brother is alive and fighting vampires on the island of Higanjima, he and his friends set out to try and help him in his fight, and to bring him home. Once there, they find themselves hopelessly outnumbered and underarmed against the horde of vampires that has taken over the entire island.
For everything that delighted me about Higanjima (2009) there were an equal number of things that bugged me. It was refreshing to see a movie in which vampires could move around freely during daylight hours, didn't need to be staked through the heart to be killed, used weapons such as swords and nets, and were pretty nasty. There was also a vampire with green skin, a really cool looking flying vampire, and a room full of vampire dolls.
On the negative side, the movie was too long, the kids were not believable adversaries for the vampires diminishing the ability to accept the vampires as a credible threat. The main vampire just looked too ridiculous to be threatening, and used a folding fan as a weapon. He made the Twilight style vampires and LeStat seem like the vampires from Blade II by comparison. There was a big monster in it that looked like a crappy cgi Alien xenomorph rip-off. The fight scenes were boring through repetition, and everything was solved with explosives, yet a sequel was implied. In the end it was more of an action movie than a horror movie.
I was really looking forward to watching this, but disappointed once I had finished.
