The Captured Bird (2012) is a short film with the quality of a dark fairy tale about the destruction of innocence as a young girl wanders off exploring the environs of an immense mansion, alternately filled with awe, or repugnance at what she discovers along the way until strange creatures rise up from a pool of ooze and confront her before escaping out into our world.
This is the first film by Jovanka Vuckovic, and it's an impressive debut, with some fantastic art direction and an honest performance by its young star. The film is available on DVD with some really worthwhile extra features. My experience has found that smaller, independent films seem to have the most useful behind the scenes documentaries and this is no exception. There are also a series of informative interviews with genre heavyweights such as George Romero under the heading of "Horror Film School."
