31 Days of Halloween - Day 20 Movie

Following my own advice, I celebrated Bela Lugosi's birthday by watching one of his movies. Granted, he's not on screen much in "Island of Lost Souls" (1933), but he does have great screen presence, even under a face covered with unruly fur. This is the first, and still the best by far, adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel "The Island of Dr. Moreau." Charles Laughton plays Dr. Moreau, the scientist who uses his uncharted island home to experiment with evolution, transforming animals into beast-like men, and a panther into a beautiful woman, who does not lure men on---only to destroy them, as this poster proclaims.

This is an excellent movie, with terrific sets, and fantastic cinematography which fully takes advantage of the topography to create revealing and concealing depth of field shots, enhancing the mystery and suspense of this movie.
