31 Days of Halloween - Day 19 - Movie 1

Attack the Block (2011) has one of those premises that seem so obvious it's hard to believe it hasn't been done already. Alien creatures drop out of the sky into a low-income housing project in London, and find themselves being fought off by a tough teenage street gang.

It's a nice change of pace from the endless movies of people screaming and helplessly running from the monsters, to seeing a bunch of pro-active kids chasing down and beating the crap out of the monsters. The kids are a colorful, likable lot, even though they may not be the most admirable people out there. They are given depth, and the actors playing them do a great job.

The alien creatures look great. They are blind, black shaggy masses with glowing blue teeth. Their blackness is absolute, making their shapes hard to determine, and allowing them to blend into each other and the darkness. They are deadly silhouettes with teeth.

Even though this is an English language movie, you'll probably want to watch it with the subtitles on. Between the accents, slang, and delivery of the dialogue, it's often hard to understand what most of the characters are saying at any time.

This movie was one of the most enjoyable movies I've watched during this countdown, and is definitely worth a look.

I think the aliens look like the Abiku from Xombi 13

I really liked this film a lot too. It's funny, my husband thought the aliens looked like the black Isz from The Maxx and I thought they looked like the stupid rat creatures from Bone. They actually look like a combination of both.

You're all right, though it hadn't occurred to me while I was watching it.
