No Sad Stuff

Here's the image to my 3-D cut paper piece for the "No Sad Stuff" a group show inspired by Tom Hanks films 1984-1994 at Gallery 1988 (West). The show opens Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 7-10 pm and runs through June 20, 2015. It's a short run, so be sure to check it out if you can.

Time Waster

Someone sent me the link to one of those click bait "articles." You know the ones: "10 Celebrities Who Were Born in a Tow Truck" or "The 15 Most Terrifying Spider-Clown Hybrids." In this case, I was actually included on the list among some distinguished company. If you have nothing better to do, check out "10 Shocking Reasons Marvel and DC Writers Quit." For everyone here, this will be old news.

Grim Gallery Turns 5

My companion blog, The Grim Gallery, devoted to all things monstrous, is now in it's 5th year. If you like monsters, go take a look. There are now well over 1400 images of monsters to dig through, some of them quite rare, and all from my personal collection.

Opening Tonight

if you live in Los Angeles, like art, and are looking for something to do tonight you might want to attend the opening of The Idiot Box 2 tonight at Gallery 1988: West. Dedicated to artwork inspired by television you'll find a lot of great work by a bunch of talented artists. The piece I did for this show can be viewed in person, or by scrolling down to the previous post.

A Boy and His Dragon

Here's a look at "A Boy and His Dragon" depicting Eddie Munster taking his pet, Spot for a stroll around the block. This is cut paper and a whopping 9" x 33" in size and will be featured as part of "The Idiot Box 2" at Gallery 1988: West, opening Friday, May 1st from 7:00pm - 10:00pm and running through May 16, 2015.





 

Idiot Box 2

I will have a piece inspired by The Munsters that will be on display at Gallery 1988 (West) as part of "The Idiot Box 2". Information on the show can be found at the Gallery 1988 website. I'll preview my piece here closer to the May 1st opening.

Opening Tonight

The "Postcard Correspondence" show opens tonight at Gallery 1988 (West). Lots of original art will be on hand as well as very affordable postcard reproductions. Scroll down to the previous post to see my own contribution to this show which will be available both as the original, and in a signed limited edition of 50 postcards. On Exhibit at the Zissou Society Aquarium

I created the above piece from cut paper for the "Postcard Correspondence" show which opens at Gallery 1988 this Friday. The image depicts the Crayon Ponyfish from The Aquatic Life of Steve Zissou  and is meant to be a souvenir that could be purchased at the gift shop of the Zissou Society Aquarium.

Both the original piece, and a limited run of 50 signed and numbered, as well as very affordable, postcard reproductions will be available at Gallery 1988 once the show opens.

The Breakfast Club Turns Thirty

Today marks the 30th Anniversary of the classic high school movie, The Breakfast Club. To mark the occassion I thought I'd share this piece I did for "The Road to Shermer" the John Hughes tribute show at Gallery 1988 a few years back. This piece was called "25th High School Reunion" and showed what I thought the characters from The Breakfast Club would look like twenty five years later. I didn't go about this the obvious way. First I determined what sort of careers and lives they'd have 25 years after the movie, then I age progressed the characters based on those decisions. I never went and looked at photos of the actors as older adults. 

The piece actually started as something I made for the 25th Anniversary of my own graduating class. Originally, Emilio Estevez's character was wearing an athletic jacket from my own high school. When I repurposed it for the Gallery 1988 show, I replaced the jacket with one true to the movie.

Manga and Anime

At the beginning of the month, Michael Jones asked me if I have, or have had, a manga or anime series that I have particularly enjoyed.

 The answer is actually quite a few. My first exposure to anime was back when it wasn't labled as such through daily afternoon viewings of Speed Racer,/Space Battleship Yamato, Gatchaman, and Captain Harlock.

More recently I've been enjoying Attack on Titan (both the manga and anime series), Blood +, and Death Note in the form of anime, though I've also seen the live action Death Note movie.

Other manga that I've liked quite a bit are Astro Boy and other works by Osamu Tezuka, such as Buddha, and The Lost World,  Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki. I'm also really fond of the Anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

There are others but those are the ones that occurred to me.
