31 Days of Halloween - Day 15 - Movie
"Horror Island" (1941) is about as much a horror movie as your average episode of "Scooby-Doo." In fact, the plot is very much like an episode of "Scooby-Doo."
A one-legged sailor (leo Carillo in a very Jack Sparrow-like performance) is in possession of one half of what he believes to be the pirate, Captain Morgan's treasure map. The other half of the map was stolen from him aby a mysterious caped "phantom." Our sailor approaches a broke, opportunist named Bill Martin (Dick Foran), who happens to be the owner of Morgan's island, with the idea of splitting the treasure. When it looks like the treasure might be a worthless fake, Martin decides to stage a treasure hunt adventure, where guests can spend $50 to take a boat to the island where they will spend the night in the haunted castle there, and search for the treasure. Martin and his assistant (Fuzzy Knight) have staged a number of ghostly gimmicks, little suspecting that the phantom would be doing a little haunting of his own. The guests start getting murdered one by one, and the race is one to determine who the culprit really is.
Directed by "The Wolf Man" director George Waggner and starring "The Mummy's Hand" actors Foran and Peggy Moran, this is a fairly entertaining hour of fluff, though one of Universal's weakest entries in it's horror franchise.
