31 Days of Halloween - Day 14

Monster: The Manticore

Appearance: "Velma's Monsters of the World: The Manticore" Scooby- Doo #132. July 2008.

Karen Matchette: Artist, Heroic Age: Colorist, Randy Gentile: Letterer, Jeanine Schaefer: Editor

The manticore is one of my favorite mythological creatures. With the body of a lion, tail of a scorpion, quills of a porcupine and head of a human man, the manticore was a pretty cool and freaky looking monster that ranged through Persia and into India and was popular in the bestiaries of medieval Europe.

I've always wanted to use the manticore as a monster in a narrative story and not just an educational piece, but still haven't gotten around to doing so. Here's three more varying interpretations of the manticore's appearance from various medieval sources.
