31 Days of Halloween - Day 1 - Movie 1

Rebecca Hall plays a celebrated ghost hunter/debunker in The Awakening (2011). Set at a boys boarding school in 1921 London, where everyone is still feeling the effects of the loss of loved ones in World War I, Hall is brought in to uncover the truth behind an alleged ghost that may have been the cause of death for one of the boys. Halls investigation uncovers a number of secrets, and awakens suppressed memories about her own past.

As I've said many times in the past, ghost stories and haunted houses are my favorite sub-genre of horror, and I prefer my ghost stories to be of the old fashioned, traditional type. The Awakening is exactly that. Smart, well acted, carefully paced with atmospheric sets and lovely cinematography, the film is a well laid out story that may have gone just a tad too far with its plot turns, but redeems itself with its ending. Not quite a masterpiece, this is still a good movie deserving of your time.
